Our inspiration came from the Clanger Cicada that has nanopillars on its wings to kill off bacteria and keep the wing surface clean.   From there we thought about how this natural strategy can be used in our pandemic time.

Contextual research was conducted to see what purpose best suited our strategy.  We found out that one of the best ways to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 was through social distancing.  From there we decided that we wanted to design a transitional space that enforced social distancing behaviors while incorporating the natural anti-bacterial properties of the cicada wing to keep our structure clean and more self-sufficient.

Throughout the process we kept in mind the Life’s Principles that are derived from biological strategies that have allowed millions of species to evolve and survive.  Following these principles led us to consider different design strategies more thoughtfully.  Some strategies include integrated the unexpected, combine modular and nested components, use multifunctional design, use low energy processes, etc.

The final product was an entry vestibule designed for one of SCAD’s academic buildings that enforces social distancing behaviors in hope to help mitigate the spread of a viral disease.  This piece also functions as seating and decoration during a non-pandemic period.  For full process book or more information feel free to contact me! This project was done in collaboration with Zoe Roane-Hopkins and Shruti Narkar.
